Herbal and Cannabis Consultations

Herbal medicine, including the responsible use of cannabis, can help support us with almost anything. Instead of targeting specific diseases, herbs work by supporting a person’s physiology and promoting self-healing mechanisms. The herbs themselves, prescribed as tinctures, teas, powders, topical preparations, or inhalants, contain an enormous array of chemicals that work together to subtly nudge human physiology towards self-correction, and promote good health.

An herbal consultation is an opportunity for you to learn natural approaches to health and receive guidance on the use of herbs and other natural modalities to optimize your health and well-being. It considers the whole person—body, mind, and spirit, as well as environmental, social, and lifestyle factors that impact your health.

An herbal consultation can help you address a specific health concern or simply improve your energy and vitality.

My Services

Herbal Consultations

An herbal consultation offers a holistic approach to your well-being and considers body, mind, spirit, as well as environmental, social, and lifestyle factors that impact your health. A holistic approach addresses the root cause of an imbalance, not just symptoms.

By giving you the time and space to tell your story, I am able to form a picture of your history, the progression of an issue, and consider other factors that may have contributed to an imbalance.

After the consultation, I will review this information and provide you with written recommendations. These may include herbs, supplements, and food or lifestyle modifications.

These recommendations are intended to support and facilitate your own informed decision making and empower you in your journey towards better health. The initial consultation usually takes 60-90 minutes. Follow-ups usually take 30-45 minutes.

Sometimes during a consultation, I will determine that your needs are not within the scope of my training, knowledge, or expertise. If this occurs, you will be referred to another healthcare practitioner that may better meet your needs. In this case, your appointment fee will be returned to you, minus a $30 appointment charge.

Cannabis Consultations

Interested in cannabis and how it might help support your overall health? I can help you learn the basics of therapeutic cannabis use, from how it interacts with our body’s overall system to finding the right dosage, strains, and methods for you.

Our endocannabinoid system is as unique as a fingerprint. Which means your healing is equally individual. We will explore how to best reach your goals for healing, focusing on what works with your lifestyle, hobbies and desires.

Next, we’ll create a plan together that works on meeting your goals by creating a multifaceted toolbox that includes the use of cannabinoids to help you achieve balance, wellness and ultimately relief.

More about Herbal Medicine

Is there any evidence for how herbal medicines work?

It’s challenging to compile empirical data for herbal treatments for a lot of reasons. One of the reasons is that there is limited funding available for testing plant extracts that cannot be patented into a sellable drug. Another challenge is that some herbs have very distinct tastes (like chili, ginger or mint) so it is difficult to create a convincing placebo. Furthermore, herbs vary in their composition according to where they are grown, how and when they are picked, dried, stored, and processed, which causes variations in results from different studies.

In the interest of safety, efficacy, and affordability, I only work with herbs that have significant evidence to back up their usage. I don’t make recommendations from anecdotal “data” or folklore. Not only is it unethical to do so, but it’s also usually wildly ineffective. If I’ve included something in a formulation for you, it means that there’s a scientific basis for it’s presence.

Can herbs be used alongside my current medication?

Most of the time, the answer is yes. There are only a few examples where this is not a good idea: St John's Wort, for example, speeds up the metabolism of certain drugs like the Pill, warfarin and statins. In fact, some herbs can even protect against the side effects of conventional medication. Turmeric has been shown to be beneficial in lessening the side effect of oral mucositis after head and neck radiotherapy. For this reason, we will always go over any medications you are currently taking during our consultation. I will always ensure that the herbs I recommend fit in with the medicines you're taking to minimize the chances of adverse interactions.

What are some issues herbal medicine can help manage?

Skin concerns like eczema, acne, dryness, psoriasis, burns, and wounds.

Physical issues such as pain, migraines, inflammation, arthritis, asthma, and Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).

Internal imbalances like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Crohn’s disease, heartburn, high blood pressure, diabetes, urinary tract infections, venous disorders, heart disease, infertility and those brought on by menopause or pregnancy.

Mental challenges such as depression, anxiety, and seasonal affective disorder (SAD)

Seasonal ailments such as colds, flu, sinusitis, and tonsillitis.
